Data access system

BioGrid.

Empowering data-driven health care decisions.

Goal

Responsible for storing large amounts of research data, BioGrid has a secure system for allowing access to researchers. But as with most secure data-driven systems, this was never pleasing to the eye, or enjoyable to use.

Answer

Working with their new branding, I designed a website to help researchers browse the data records available, as well as an integrated process to apply for access to the secure portal.

Browse data.

A filtered database of secure medical studies.

PIXO created a front-end company website for BioGrid which displays the high-level details of their available data before researchers can apply for access. I was responsible for taking BioGrid’s new logo and colours, and converting it into a full digital brand.

The website had to present large amounts of complex data, but still remain easy to navigate and understand. The greatest challenge was their library of research, which pulled information from a regularly updated CSV. It allowed medical professionals to browse through topics, filter institutions, match participants, and download relevant documents to learn more about each study before applying for access to the data.

Access data.

Rethinking a complex and secure process.

Collaborating with the team at BioGrid, I assisted with rethinking the user experience of their complex application process, and redesigned it to create a seamless transition from the new company website.

As all data hosted within BioGrid includes private medical information, it must be stored securely, and handled ethically. When applying for access, researchers submit detailed information about their project and investigators. Their application must then be approved by multiple channels, including a BioGrid reviewer, an ethical committee, and the owners of the data they wish to access.

BioGrid’s system handles the entire review process, allowing the committees to also comment and discuss the application.
